eMusic Picks – Apr
Featured Releases
Andrew Bird, Armchair Apocrypha (12)
The whistling violinist’s latest is up. Also be sure to grab the eMusic only single “Self-Torture.”
Bent, Ariels (12)
Sure, this shows up soon after I finally lay out for the import. Brilliant, lush used-to-be-downtempo-but-now-too-upbeat in the vein of Locust’s “Morning Light.” Pastoral electronica, maybe? Trip-happy? The single Comin’ Back also available with a couple worthwhile B-sides.
Bleep, Datenbergbau (6) / IMM 0008 (10)
Not the same as the Bleep that became Biosphere (with guy from Bel Canto), which is how I found them, but glitchy trip-hop.
Blümchen! First three albums, many singles, plus a live set and the greatest hits collection “Für Immer Und Ewig” (Forever and Ever). I think the only things missing for a complete sweep is the last album “Die Welt Gehört Dir” and the few singles released just as Jasmin Wagner. Compared to how much I spent on importing all of these…(sob)
Be sure not to miss the Blossom releases, which were re-recorded in English and sold exclusively to Japan (and were hella expensive to get). I don’t know why Jasmin sings “Little Satellite” with a slight Texan accent, but it’s impossibly adorable anyway.
DeVotchka, How It Ends (14)
I first got hooked on this when “How It Ends” underscored the trailer for “Everything Is Illuminated.” They’re also all over the “Little Miss Sunshine” soundtrack.
Kelli Ali, Tigermouth (12) / Psychic Cat (10)
Both solo albums by former singer for Sneaker Pimps.
Mono, You Are There (6)
If you’re into the whole post-rock, endless guitar build crescendo scene, check out this along with the latest Explosions in the Sky, All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone (6). Added bonus: they take up less download slots than an average 11-track album (I’ve filled up on Steve Roach’s tribal-ambient albums, by the same logic).
various, Jukebox Buddha (15)
Features remixes of the samples from the Buddha Machine.
You can also pick up three albums by Múm and most works by Ms. John Soda now.
Finally, just for amusement, the latest eMusic Dozen article is on goth.
